Preserving Indigenous Heritage. Strengthening Livelihoods. Building Sustainable Futures.
The Paliyars are an indigenous tribal community inhabiting the forested Sirumalai Hills of Tamil Nadu. Their lives and livelihoods are closely connected to the surrounding forests, natural resources and traditional ecological knowledge passed down through generations.
Their familiarity with forest produce, local vegetation and seasonal resources represents a valuable heritage. Yet economic hardship, inadequate housing, limited educational opportunities and dependence on uncertain sources of income present serious challenges to the continuity of their traditional way of life.

Preserving Indigenous Knowledge
Nilam seeks to support the documentation and preservation of traditional knowledge associated with herbal plants, forest produce and natural resource management. We aim to explore opportunities for responsible herbal collection, organic composting and biofertiliser production, combining community knowledge with appropriate technical support.
Preserving these skills is equally about enabling younger generations to inherit, practise and develop them into viable livelihoods.
Sustainable Livelihoods Through Goat Rearing
Nilam's livestock livelihood programme supports Paliyar families through the provision of goats and practical training in animal husbandry.
The initiative is designed to help participating households develop small herds, generate additional income and gradually strengthen their economic independence. By building on locally relevant livestock-rearing practices, the programme seeks to create livelihood opportunities within their own communities.

Housing and Community Wellbeing
Nilam is working towards providing safe and adequate housing for approximately 70 tribal families.
The proposed housing initiative aims to improve living conditions, provide greater security and support family wellbeing while respecting the communities' connection to their land and surroundings.
Education for Future Generations
Through its foundation, Nilam aims to improve tribal children's access to education and learning opportunities.
The initiative seeks to support basic education, continued learning and practical skill development, while encouraging the transmission of indigenous knowledge between generations.
Education should enable young people to pursue wider opportunities without having to lose their connection to their communities, cultural heritage or local environment.

Our Commitment
Nilam's approach brings together indigenous knowledge preservation, sustainable livelihoods, housing and education as interconnected priorities.
Our purpose is to strengthen the conditions in which Paliyar families can build secure livelihoods, preserve their ecological heritage and pass their knowledge to future generations.
We provide them with livelihood opportunities like goat rearing, cow herding and herbal collection, through to Ayurvedic medicine preparation. We support them by providing shelters and study space in our farm.
Rooted in Their Land. Sustained by Their Knowledge. Empowered for the Future.
